Therapy For Anxiety

Anxiety is something that people find very difficult to describe or explain. But it can have a massive impact on someone’s well-being and day to day life. Often people can feel very overwhelmed, worried or on edge. Anxiety can also leave people feeling paralysed or at times in a high state of panic.

Anxiety can be trigged by many things, some of the common causes include:

  • Separation / divorce
  • Coping with a new job
  • Any major life change
  • Developing phobias of things like spiders, thunder, closed spaces etc.

At Your Counselling Service we understand that a persons anxiety is incredibly difficult for them to experience – no matter what the trigger is. We acknowledge people may experience a sense of fear or panic, or perhaps start to feel as though they can’t cope. We understand that anxiety can impact a persons physical and mental health. That it can change their sleep patterns and the way they eat. We acknowledge that anxiety is often associated with stress, and we are aware of the impact that it can have on individuals relationships.

How we can help beat anxiety

We work hard with our clients to help them to implement strategies and coping mechanisms to cope with anxiety and to manage the impact that it has on their lives. We give our clients a therapeutic toolbox so that they can cope with anxiety when it starts to rise and so that they can learn how to manage it. We incorporate things such as stress management, breathing techniques, lifestyle changes, health and well being plans as well as time management, the use of lists, journals and the implementation of self-care. We follow the important philosophy that ‘it all begins with you’, so we emphasise this in our work and ensure that our clients make themselves a priority in their own work.

In addition to this we use the therapeutic space to help individuals to work through the underlying issues in their life and to address any concerns, worries or experiences (past or present) that may be contributing towards their anxiety. Therapy offers a space to work through the stresses and difficulties in an individual’s life and then enables them to move forward more positively, with better self-care in place combined with a set of tools to manage any anxiety that may rise in the future.

Hear Lucy’s story

In this video Lucy very kindly volunteered to share her recovery experience with Your Counselling Service. It gives insights into how she was treated from the moment she enquired to the moment she recovered, and is a great example of how we like to treat and work with all our clients.

Our approach to helping those with anxiety

  • Starting the recovery process is the biggest step forward
  • Learn to respect and value yourself
  • Everything in moderation
  • Trust the process of recovery
  • Self-soothing and respect is key
  • Mood diaries can be very helpful
  • Everyone is individual with their own recovery plan
  • Emotional and physical health is so important
  • Change can happen and it can be positive
  • Fear can be overcome
  • Support network is important (and our service becomes a major part of this)
  • Feeling less alone and isolated aids recovery
  • Self-worth and esteem can develop through therapy
  • You are never alone
  • Recovery takes time, strength, and determination
  • We are here to help whenever you feel you can’t do it

Lets take your first step to recovery, together.

Making the decision to start therapy is both daunting and frightening. People often feel nervous and don’t know what to expect. To give you an idea, we would book an assessment as an initial chance for us to meet and talk. This would last an hour, and it is an opportunity to ask questions and to get to know you more. You can also ask about anything that you are unsure about. If you feel comfortable and are happy to go ahead, then we would book you in for weekly therapy. Each week would be different depending on where you are at, and what you are coming for. We can discuss all of your needs in the assessment and put a treatment plan in place. We have a great team and we are here to help.
